Building your Reputation as a QME

While passing the QME examination is an accomplishment in itself, establishment of a good reputation as a QME requires more than just obtaining the basic qualifications.  Securing a high number of requests for AMEs and QMEs demands a strategic approach to building credibility, fostering trust, and showcasing expertise. Developing a robust reputation as a QME is accomplished over time with consistently high-quality reports.

A Friendly and Approachable Demeanor:

Your interactions with applicants during evaluations and attorneys during depositions will obviously convey your concern for the case and for the applicant.  Even when there are questions about the case, it is important to treat the injured worker with the respect that they deserve.  An injured worker can request a new panel for unprofessional behavior.  Listen carefully to your injured workers, as yours is often the most lengthy and detailed physician’s visit that they will ever experience.

Keep in mind that your office staff, whether through a management company or your own staff, will also reflect on you.  Some management companies save money by hiring underperforming staff who may not have the customer service skills to build your reputation.

Deliver Timely and Thorough Evaluations:

Build trust with injured workers, attorneys, and claims administrators by consistently delivering timely and comprehensive evaluations. Schedule appointments promptly, conduct thorough examinations, and provide detailed, high-quality reports that address all relevant medical issues. Producing neutral, high-quality reports will not only strengthen your reputation amongst applicant attorneys and insurance adjusters alike, but also lessen your chances of being called into deposition. A strong QME management company will be able to provide you with the necessary guidance to create these superior reports.

Build Professional Relationships:

Actively engage with fellow QMEs, treating physicians, attorneys, and other members of the Workers’ Compensation community. Attend professional conferences, seminars, and networking events to expand your professional network as well as obtain the required CME credits for QMEs. The California Orthopaedic Association offers these continuing education credits at their annual meeting, while the California Applicants’ Attorneys Association and its local chapters offer the ability to meet with applicant attorneys face to face.  Other professional societies within Workers’ Compensation will allow you to meet adjustors, raters, and DWC leadership.

Optimize Location Placement:

QMEs are allowed to list themselves at a maximum of 10 office locations throughout the state of California. Maintain as many office listings as possible to maximize the number of evaluations you will perform. At OrthoLegal, we will optimize your location placement to grow your QME practice rapidly.

Market Yourself:

Physicians often market themselves through websites and business cards.  Be sure to append your title with QME, and AME if appropriate. This will enhance your visibility in the field.

Building a strong reputation as a Qualified Medical Evaluator in California can be done through a strategic approach of delivering thorough and timely evaluations, producing neutral, high-quality reports, and by becoming actively involved in the QME industry through conferences and networking. Following these methods can differentiate yourself as a trusted and respected authority in the field of Workers’ Compensation. Working with the right management company will bolster your status in the QME world. Contact the team at OrthoLegal to learn more about how to start and grow your medicolegal practice!
