Preparing for the California Qualified Medical Evaluator (QME) examination is essential for physicians who wish to become certified as QMEs in the state. Offered twice per year in April and October, this exam certifies professionals for two years, validating their expertise in the California Workers’ Compensation system, medicolegal issues, and related labor codes and regulations. With only two weeks left to sign up for the upcoming QME Exam, now is the perfect time to dive into the details. Here is a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process and ensure you’re well-prepared for this critical step in your career.
Exam Duration and Location
You have three hours to complete the QME exam. Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete the necessary sign-in process. The exam is administered by CPS HR Consulting’s partner, Pearson VUE. You can take the exam at any of Pearson VUE’s convenient test centers. This flexibility allows you to choose a location that best fits your schedule and geographic preference. You do not have to be based in California in order to take the exam.
Receiving Your Invitation to Test
You will receive an Authorization to Test notification via email from Pearson VUE. This email will guide you to the QME landing page hosted by Pearson VUE, where you can create an online account and schedule your exam. Ensure your email address is unique to you, as this will be crucial for receiving the notification and accessing your account.
If you struggle to find an appointment, expand your search area beyond your preferred location. Scheduling your exam as early as possible is recommended due to limited availability in some locations. The exam does take place over the course of a week to ensure physicians are able to accommodate the test into their busy practice schedule. Candidates can take the QME exam at any Pearson VUE location in the U.S. and internationally.
Test Day Requirements
You must present two forms of original, valid IDs. One should be a primary ID (government-issued with name, photo, and signature), and the other should be a secondary ID (with name and signature or name and recent recognizable photo). Both IDs must match the name you used to register. No personal items are allowed in the testing room, including bags, books, notes, phones, pagers, watches, and wallets.
Rescheduling or Canceling Your Exam
To reschedule, contact Pearson VUE customer service or access your online account at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. Rescheduling within 48 hours or missing your exam will result in forfeiting your exam fees. Exceptions are not made in the event of add-on/emergency surgeries or if you become ill.
Receiving Your Test Results
You will receive your examination results via email approximately four to six weeks after the last examination date of the exam period. If you are working with a management company, the test results will typically be sent to the company to then be relayed to the physicians. Note that results will not be available through your Pearson VUE account.
If you do not pass the exam, you have the right to appeal your score. Write to the administrative director with specific concerns within 10 days of receiving your exam results. Grounds for appeal include:
- Significant procedural error in the exam process
- Unfair discrimination
- Bias or fraud
Document your reasons thoroughly to support your appeal (8 CCR § 11(f)(10)).
After passing the exam, you may qualify for listing in a specific specialty if you were listed in that specialty as of June 30, 2000, or if you completed a residency recognized by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or are board certified in that specialty. The Medical Board of California must recognize the board certifying the specialty. Your management company will be able to handle this paperwork on your behalf.
Understanding these key aspects of the QME exam will help you prepare effectively and navigate the process with confidence. If you are interested in signing up for the Fall QME Exam, contact the team at OrthoLegal today!
