Dr. Benjamin W. Hoyt is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, and academic physician with expertise in sports medicine, shoulder surgery, orthopedic trauma, and complex musculoskeletal injuries. He currently serves as a Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Department Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois, while also maintaining a clinical appointment with Orthopedic Specialists at Edwards-Elmhurst Hospital.
Commissioned as a Naval officer in 2012, Dr. Hoyt earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2016. He subsequently completed his orthopedic surgery internship and residency through the National Capital Consortium at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, graduating in 2022. During his training, he also completed a dedicated Orthopaedic Research Fellowship, further strengthening his expertise in clinical outcomes research, surgical innovation, and evidence-based orthopedic care.
Dr. Hoyt’s clinical practice focuses on musculoskeletal trauma, upper extremity and shoulder conditions, and sports-related injuries. He performs a wide range of arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures, including shoulder stabilization, labral repair, rotator cuff repair, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal repair, and ultrasound-guided trigger finger and carpal tunnel release procedures. He also has extensive experience in fracture care, reconstructive surgery, and shoulder arthroplasty. Throughout his career, he has provided sports medicine coverage for elite athletic programs, including the West Point Army Black Knights and the United States Air Force Academy.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hoyt serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at both Rosalind Franklin University School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University Department of Surgery. He is actively involved in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and military healthcare personnel, serving as Orthopaedic Surgery Clerkship Director and Medical Student Senior Elective Coordinator.
An active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Hoyt remains committed to advancing orthopedic surgery through clinical excellence, research, education, and military service.
